Four People Killed in Alleged Street Racing Accident in Houston

Speeding

In a tragic accident in Houston, four people have died after being involved in what police believe, was a street race. The accident occurred early on Saturday morning and involved two GMC trucks that were traveling at high speeds. The motorists apparently lost control of their vehicles, and crashed in a parking lot.

The driver and passenger in one of the trucks died instantly, while two passengers in the other truck were also killed.  The driver of one pickup truck has been hospitalized, and is in a stable condition. He can expect charges filed against him.

There is still no information on the age of the victims or gender. All in all, this was an incredible tragedy, and simply drives home the point that drag racing and street racing is foolish behavior that can have terrible consequences. Police will be looking to talk to the surviving driver as soon as he is able to answer their questions.  They also believe that alcohol was a possible factor in this crash.

All the passengers in this particular accident were killed. As a Houston accident lawyer who frequently meets with families of people killed by the wrong decisions of another, I know that the families of these victims will have some very hard questions indeed.

Street racing continues to be a serious problem in Houston. We also have a major problem involving drunk driving in Harris County. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Harris County has the proud distinction of having more numbers of DUI fatalities per capita than any other counties.  In 2006, 203 people died in DUI accidents in Harris County, and of this, 147 fatalities occurred in alcohol-related accidents involving a motorist with a BAC level of .08 percent or more.  In fact, MADD estimates that people in Houston are likely to die in an accident involving a drunk driver at a rate that is more than 4 times that in Austin, and 1.5 times that in Dallas.

We either have a culture of inebriated driving in Harris County, or defense attorneys here seem to do a far better job of getting DUI offenders back on the road than in any other area. Either way, it’s innocent people who suffer.
