The Montgomery County Sheriff’s office has announced that it has arrested a suspected driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident last week that killed a 13-year-old boy.
The victim, a seventh grader was apparently on his way home from a sleepover. He was walking on the paved shoulder with a friend, when a pickup truck swerved onto the shoulder. The friend was able to jump out of the truck’s way just in time, but the victim was unable to avoid head injuries. He was immediately airlifted to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office, witnesses had reported seeing a motorist in a pickup truck driving recklessly just before the fatal accident. Witnesses at the scene were able to follow the pickup truck driver who tried to flee from the scene. He apparently fled home, but came out later, and has now been arrested. The driver has been identified as 28-year-old Javier Correa. He was reported smelling heavily of alcohol. As to be expected, he will be charged on failure to stop and render aid, besides driving while intoxicated.
My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the family of the boy here.
Montgomery County’s approach to drunk driving was in the news earlier this year after it was revealed that names of drunk drivers would be “tweeted” on Twitter. These “name and shame” tactics according to the DA here, will make motorists think twice before they get behind the wheel drunk. As a Houston injury lawyer, however, I have to wonder if humiliation is a sufficient deterrent for people like the drunk driver here, who have so recklessly cost a family their son.
