NTSB Releases Federal Safety Wish List for 2010: Truck Safety is a Priority

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its 2010 Most Wanted List of Federal Safety Improvements, and these contain safety recommendations for the aviation, rail, marine and transportation sectors. For an injury lawyer in Houston, there was plenty in the list to encourage.

The NTSB has focused especially hard on trucking safety for 2010. It has placed special emphasis on the installation of electronic onboard recorders in commercial trucks. The recorders can help prevent truck drivers from driving above the permissible hours by recording the number of times the truck is turned on and off. Besides, the wish list contains recommendations for preventing unsafe trucks from being operated, and preventing unsafe and negligent drivers from operating commercial trucks. The NTSB wish list also raises concerns about medically unfit truck drivers continuing to operate commercial trucks.

The agency is also recommending enhanced motor coach safety in the wake of a number of fatal bus accidents in the country. It is proposing the redesign of emergency exits, stronger bus roof strength standards and better protection against ejection for passengers.

Aviation safety was topmost on NTSB chairperson Deborah Houseman’s mind, it appears. The NTSB recommends  that the Federal Aviation Administration mandate that airlines obtain records of flight check failures by job applicants. It also includes recommendations that the FAA mandate special training courses for deficient pilots. It is also requesting image recorders in cockpits for transport aircraft and smaller aircraft that do not come with recorders.

NTSB recommendations however, are not binding on federal safety agencies that are charged with implementing the recommendations. In fact, past records show that dozens of NTSB recommendations have remained pending as federal agencies have chosen to sit on these recommendations for years altogether. As an injury lawyer in Houston, I hope that the 2010 Most Wanted List of Federal Safety Improvements will be taken up quickly by the agencies concerned.
