Recall of One Million Baby Slings Because of Infant Suffocation Risks

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and baby sling maker Infantino have announced a recall of up to 1 million baby slings after the deaths of three infants due to suffocation.

The recall had been in the works for a few days now. Last week, the CPSC warned parents and caregivers that baby slings posed an unusually high risk of suffocation deaths to infants. Baby slings have grown in popularity in Texas, and throughout the United States. These are made of soft fabric that allows the baby to settle down into a comfortable shape. In the bag-style slings that are included in the recall, babies can quickly fall into the fetal position. This may lead to problems with breathing, when the baby’s nose gets blocked by its chest. Besides, there are suffocation risks involved when the baby turns towards the mother.

The baby sling models included in the recall are the Sling Rider and the Wendy Bellissimo slings marketed by Infantino. The CPSC is warning parents to discontinue use of these slings, and contact Infantino for a free replacement.

Certain infants are especially likely to suffocate in these slings. The CPSC has noted certain common patterns in the deaths resulting from these slings. These have typically involved babies below the age of four months, preemies and babies suffering from nasal blockage and colds. Babies below four months may be unable to hold their head up, and this may cause their heads to flop on the chest, and create a suffocation hazard.
