The number of alcohol-related car crashes across Texas has declined somewhat, but injury lawyers in Houston continue to come across lives lost and families shattered in drunk driving accidents. This week, a 14-year-old teenager was killed in an accident involving an intoxicated motorist in Katy.

The girl was traveling with her siblings and three other adults in their Toyota Camry, when it was struck by a pickup driven by Texas Tech University Jeffrey Thomas. While the girl died at the scene, her siblings and three other persons in the car including her mother, had to be rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. Thomas has been arrested and charged.

The number of people killed in drunk driving accidents in Texas has declined over the last couple of years. In 2008, there were 1,269 deaths from alcohol-related crashes involving motorists with a blood alcohol level of more than .08 in the state. That is a decline from 1,333 deaths in 2007. Figures for 2009 are not available. Stronger enforcement has contributed to fewer intoxicated motorists willing to drive drunk.

However, the high risk groups for drunk driving continue to cause great concern to Houston car accident attorneys. These include young male drivers and teen motorists. Young male drivers are much more likely to be involved in fatal accidents than female drivers. Teen motorists face an entirely different set of challenges as they learn how to drive safely. Foremost among these is peer pressure to drink and drive.

The Houston area continues to be one of the most dangerous in the country in terms of the number of drunk motorists.
