Houston work accident attorneys typically come across cases involving construction workers, oil refinery workers, miners, injured truckers and other kinds of workers. However, an employee may be at risk of injuries in any kind of workplace setting.
Last week saw an employee at a skydiving company in Ulster County in Texas die in a skydiving accident. According to news reports, the man was a Hungarian national, and worked as a skydiver for Sky Dive Atlas of Gardiner. At the time the accident occurred, the unidentified man was photographing a group of skydivers parachuting. According to witnesses on the ground, the man’s parachute opened, but then suddenly collapsed, when he turned into the wind.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident. According to the agency, the man survived the impact of the fall, but the injuries were too severe, and he died later. According to Sky Dive Atlas, the man was an experienced skydiver and had more than 10,000 jumps to his credit.
A skydiver will tell you that no matter whether you have 10,000 dives to your credit, there is that one incident where you may be at risk from bad equipment, bad decisions, or just bad luck.
Considering that the number of people who skydive every year is an estimated 15 million people, the number of fatalities occurring in such accidents is quite low. On an average, 35 persons die every year in skydiving accidents. Many of these accidents involve highly experienced skydivers, and not beginners.
A skydiver working for a skydiving outfit, and injured in an accident maybe eligible for Workers’ Compensation claims just like any other employee. In accidents where the cause of the accident can be traced to defective gear, a Houston work accident attorney may also name the manufacturer of the equipment in a third-party lawsuit.
