The process of holding companies like Transocean, BP and others involved in the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, has begun in full swing. Not only have injured workers filed lawsuits alleging negligence against Transocean and other companies, but commercial fishermen and shrimpers are filing lawsuits related to the oil spill that is threatening their livelihood.

Last week, two new federal lawsuits were filed by commercial shrimpers in Louisiana. The complaint alleged that the spill resulting from the Transocean oil explosion, is causing major and catastrophic environmental damage in the sensitive and wetlands of the Louisiana coastline. This damage is expected to cause severe loss of revenue to commercial fishing vessels and shrimpers in the area. Not only that, commercial fishermen may have to stop fishing activities in the area for months and even years after the spill is cleaned up. The two lawsuits filed last week claimed compensatory and economic damages of a minimum of $5 million. These lawsuits name Transocean Offshore Deep Water Drilling Inc., BP, Cameron International Corporation, the company which manufactured the blowout preventer believed to the main factor in the explosion and Halliburton Energy Services Ltd..

There are indications that the size of the Transocean oil rig explosion of 2010 will exceed that of the Exxon Valdez spill of Alaska in 2000. That spill was estimated to be about 11 million barrels. Considering that the Transocean oil rig leak is estimated currently to be about 5,000 barrels a day, and that it could take 90 days to fix the leak, we could be looking at final figures of more than $18 million barrels. The resulting impact on the ecological balance in these areas could be devastating.
