Drowsy driving kills an unaccounted number of people every year. The reason for that is that there is no well-established system for reporting drowsy driving accidents. No state except New Jersey has laws against driving in a drowsy state.
Drowsy driving has been blamed for an accident in Brazos County in January that killed two people. The teen motorist in that accident apparently fell asleep at the wheel. 18-year-old Trevor Moore was driving an SUV-in January when he struck two men. The two victims died in the accident.
According to Brazos County police, there were no indications that Moore was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. There was also no indication that he had been distracted, or that he had been texting while driving or talking on the phone at the time he struck the two men. That is why the Brazos County Assistant Dist. Atty. has decided that Moore will not face charges in the deaths of the two men.
Obviously, for the families and friends of the two men were killed, that is a painful thing to hear. They want investigations to focus on why Moore fell asleep while driving in the afternoon.
Any Houston accident lawyer will tell you that drowsy driving is a silent killer, contributing to hundreds of fatalities every year. Some persons are at a higher risk of drowsy driving than others. For example
- People who work in shifts
- People on certain kinds of medications that induce drowsiness
- People who perform monotonous jobs, like truckers who may have to drive along endless highways alone
- Teen motorists between the ages of 16 and 19
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends the following steps to prevent drowsy driving crashes.
- Getting sufficient sleep before driving
- Avoiding alcohol use before driving
- Limiting the amount of driving you do between midnight and six in the morning, which is when you’re most likely to doze off
- Consuming caffeine
- Taking a short 15 to 20 minute nap before driving
