Increased crackdowns on seatbelt violations have begun across Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation has announced that it has begun its annual campaign against seatbelt violations. The campaign is called “Click It or Ticket” and will run through the month of May and the Memorial Day weekend.
There’ll be more numbers of police troopers stopping motorists to check for seat belt usage. I would also like to remind people in Texas that there has been a change in seatbelt laws. Now, all occupants in a motor vehicle are required to wear their seatbelts. This means that as a motorist you are responsible not just for wearing a seat belt yourself, but also making sure that your front seat passengers and back seat passengers are also wearing their seatbelts.
The Click It or Ticket campaign has been very successful in raising seatbelt usage rates across Texas. As a Houston injury lawyer, I take pride in the fact that Texas has some of the highest rates of seatbelt usage in the country. Seatbelt usage rates are well above the 83 % national average. Much of this has been due to the fact that the Texas Department of Transportation has been very aggressive in enforcing seat belt use.
During a major accident, a seatbelt can be the only thing standing between you and certain death. Certain types of accidents like rollover crashes involve a higher risk of being ejected from the vehicle. In accidents like this, a seatbelt can help save lives.
The Texas Department of Transportation expects to ramp up enforcement as the Memorial Day holiday nears. There will be more numbers of people driving across Texas to celebrate the holiday with loved ones, and the risk of accidents is likely to increase.
