Truck drivers in Texas are required to drive at safe speeds. That doesn’t simply mean that the truck driver must drive at the posted speed limits for commercial motor vehicles. It also means that truck drivers must drive taking into consideration the existing traffic, road and weather conditions.
An accident last week in Texarkana, Texas is being blamed on the failure of a truck driver to stop his vehicle in time to avoid traffic that had slowed down at a construction zone. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the big rig driver was approaching a construction zone on I 30, and was unable to slow down in time. The tractor-trailer mowed down six vehicles that were stopped at the zone. At least 10 people were injured, and three people were injured seriously enough to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
Construction work zones tend to be some of the biggest accident magnets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 4,000 people are killed in accidents that occur in construction zones around the country every year.
The biggest rule of thumb to prevent an accident at a work zone is to slow down speeds as you near the zone.
It seems clear that the 18-wheeler driver here failed to notice warning signs that are typically posted as motorists near a work zone, or ignored these. Construction work zone accidents that involve trucks can be catastrophic in nature, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries. When you have a massive tractor-trailer barreling down even at normal speeds towards a bunch of vehicles that have slowed down at an already congested work zone full of workers and equipment, it can be a disastrous situation.
I hope that all the injured people here make a speedy recovery.
