Last month, I blogged about the fact that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had launched a website dedicated to providing trucking companies accident and inspection records of potential truck driver candidates. This week, the agency announced that the website is finally online.

Trucking companies will now be able to access truck driver accident records dating back five years, and inspection records dating back three years. Companies with a fleet of more than 100 vehicles are required to pay an annual subscription fee of $100, and an additional charge of $10 for every truck driver record they choose to access. Fleets of fewer than 100 vehicles will be charged an annual subscription fee of $25, and charged $10 for every truck driver record. Individual truck drivers can also access their own accident and inspection history, and they will be charged $10 for every record, with no annual subscription fee.

Houston truck accident attorneys, truck safety groups and trucking companies have been calling for a federal database like this for years now. The database will be continuously updated with new truck driver records from around the country. With a wealth of such information available at their fingertips, trucking companies will be able to screen potential truck driver candidates and make a safe choice.

The importance of hiring competent, qualified and experienced truck drivers with safe accident records cannot be overstated. This website is one of the most important trucking safety features introduced in the past couple of months, and it makes me very pleased to see that trucking companies now have the important information they need to hire safe drivers.
