FDA Recommends Avandia Be Withdrawn from Market

An FDA panel this week recommended that Glaxo’s anti diabetes drug, Avandia be either withdrawn from the market, or that the ageny place restrictions on its use. It was a major blow to GlaxoSmithKline, but not entirely unexpexpected to Houston injury lawyers, given that Glaxo had come under such criticism from an FDA  ofcial last week.

The report by the Food And Drug Administration official had strong criticism for a  clinical trial conducted by GlaxoSmithKline to show that it’s anti-diabetes drug is safe for use by consumers. Avandia has been at the center of a major medical storm, with allegations that the drug increases the risk of developing heart disease. GlaxoSmithKline has  always resisted those allegations, in spite of the fact that some of its own studies have shown a link between Avandia use and development of heart disease.
However, Glaxo has relied heavily on a study called Record to show that Avandia is safe for use.  It’s this study that has come under the scanner by the Food And Drug Administration. The FDA official Dr. Thomas Marciniak, reviewed the clinical trial  and found that dozens of cases, where patients had taken Avandia and developed heart
disease, had not been included in the trial.

The panel’s recommendation that  Avandia be removed from the market, or that its sales be restricted will further imapct Avandia’s declining sales. Not surprisingly, GlaxoSmithKline continues to insist that the Record study demonstrates that Avandia is safe to use.
The risk of developing heart disease is not the only health risk Avandia has beene linked to. Avandia has  also been linked to a higher risk of osteoporosis, and bone fractures. It has also been linked to a higher incidence of eye injuries.

For  Houston product liability attorneys, Avandia is the most pressing health safety issues since the Vioxx scandal. It’s about time that the FDA either removed Avandia from the market or at least placed severe restrictions on its use. If you are an Avandia user, we would advise you to not stop using Avandia without consulting your physician.
