New Crib Safety Guidelines in the Pipeline

Last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted 5-2 to implement safer standards for cribs.  That decision by the agency comes because of numerous crib recalls over the past year that were linked to several injuries and fatalities.  Most of these adverse incidents were linked to drop side cribs.

What the agency has recommended are just proposed guidelines, and there must be a final vote before the guidelines are approved.  However, once these guidelines are approved-as Houston product liability lawyers believe they will be-parents can expect a much safer environment for their children than the current clip designs allow.

So, exactly how much safer will these new guidelines make your crib?  For one, we can expect cribs with much stronger and better mattress supports.  Many adverse incidents involving cribs have involved the market supports breaking off, causing the drop side to become detached from the crib, and creating a gap that is full of entrapment and suffocation hazards.  Besides, manufacturers will also be required to use high-quality wood in the manufacture of these cribs.  Crib manufacturers will also be required to conduct much stricter and stringent safety tests.  Anything that does not meet the new requirements will have to be discarded by manufacturers.

Besides manufacturers, hotels, motels and day care centers and other facilities that use cribs, will also be held to the new high standards.  That means once the new rules are in place, all older design cribs will have to be discarded.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is moving fast on the question of drop side cribs.  The agency has already asked parents to avoid using these cribs, even if these are not included in any recall list.  The idea is to ban drop side cribs altogether.  As a Houston product liability attorney and father myself, I believe it’s high time that we had stronger crib safety guidelines in place, instead of initiating a new recall every month for the same old problem.
