A truck driver was killed in a single vehicle accident involving his truck in Midland last week. According to News West 9, the truck driver was driving a Basic Energy truck on Interstate 20 in Midland. At some point, a truck tire blew out, and sent the truck out of control. The truck swerved off the road, and crashed through the median right into incoming traffic. It then crashed into a field, and flipped over. The driver sustained serious injuries, and was rushed to the Midland Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and there were no other injuries reported.
Commercial trucks are much more prone to tire blowouts than passenger vehicles. These are large heavy vehicles that are typically carrying approximately 80,000 pounds, and as a result, there is substantial wear and tear on the tires, which are the only part of the tractor-trailer in direct contact with the road. This is the reason why tire maintenance is such a major part of 18 wheeler maintenance. It’s important that the truck driver conduct a pretrip inspection of the truck before begins driving. This includes checking for the tire tread. Insufficient tire tread can cause a blowout, leading to loss of control over the vehicle.
There are other kinds of injuries that can occur because of a tire blowout. For instance, commercial truck tires can be huge, and weigh hundreds of pounds. A blowout can result in large chunks of rubber shooting out from the tire, and into other vehicles nearby. These are rare occurrences, but when they do occur, they typically have devastating consequences for motorists nearby. The pieces of rubber can be large enough to crash through car windshields.
