Sometime during the last month, Toyota marked a safety milestone of sorts. No. The company did not make a solemn promise to itself that it would never brush safety issues under the carpet and would be forthright with customers and federal agencies from now on. Instead, Toyota marked its 15th vehicle recall of the year. This latest one involved 1.1 million Corollas and Matrixes for stalling problems that can cause the car to stall in traffic.
The announcement of the recall came just a few days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would intensify its investigation of Toyota over the stalling problem. According to Toyota, the problem is a manufacturing defect in the engine control unit module. The company has confirmed that there’ve been at least three accidents related to the sudden stalling. At least one of those accidents resulted in an injury. However, in a filing with the federal agency, the automaker had mentioned that there were six accidents.
To say 2010 has not been Toyota’s year would be an understatement. Since the beginning of the year, Toyota has recalled about 5.8 million vehicles. That’s not even counting the millions of vehicles that were recalled last year soon after the sticky accelerator pedal problem burst into the limelight. Some particular models like the Corolla and the Avalon have been involved in more than one recall.
At the rate at which Toyota safety skeletons are tumbling out the closet, it looks like Toyota recall lawyers will be kept busy for a while.
