I’m pleased to announce that our Houston-based injury law firm has filed a mass injury lawsuit against BP over benzene exposure from a leak at the company’s Texas City refinery earlier this year.
The lawsuit was filed in Galveston, Texas federal court, and we’re representing 120 persons who suffered exposure to benzene during the leak from the refinery. The leak occurred between April 6 and May 16, 2010. The persons included in the lawsuit live and work near the Texas City refinery.
The leak of 538,000 pounds of chemicals, including 17,000 pounds of benzene occurred during a 40-day period between April and May this year. During an ultra cracker malfunctioning at the plant, BP shut down the compressor, and began rerouting gases to a flare while it tried to fix the compressor. During these 40 days, hundreds of thousands of potentially deadly chemicals leaked, while residents of Texas City remained unaware that they were being exposed to these chemicals.
Benzene is a particularly deadly carcinogen that is found in cigarette smoke, industrial emissions and automobile exhaust. A sudden high-volume exposure to benzene can result in symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, tremors, headaches, and even death. It has also been linked to the development of certain cancers, including various blood cancers, like leukemia. It has also been linked to several types of anemia. Long-term exposure to benzene can result in irregular menstrual periods, and change in the size of the ovaries.
