Worker Injured in Ackerly Oil Well Explosion Succumbs to Injuries

A worker, who was injured in an oil well explosion near Ackerly earlier this year, has died from his injuries.

The man was seriously injured during the explosion, which occurred in August, about 20 miles south of Lamesa.  He suffered serious burns over 80 percent of his body.  The victim and another worker were employees of Midland-based Basic Energy Services.  They were at the well for support duties, and didn’t know that gas was leaking into the air.  The natural gas was sucked into the engine of the vehicle nearby, and exploded.  The two men sustained serious injuries.  The second victim continues to remain in a critical condition at a local hospital.

Work in the oil and gas industry continues to be the most dangerous for American workers.  Every year, more people are killed and injured in this industry than in any other industry.  These injuries include head injuries, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, burn injuries, fractures and broken bones and neck and back injuries.  They occur because explosions, burns, and falls or because of defective machinery.  Workers may be injured because the work is strenuous, and they have little training or assistance.  Other times, musculoskeletal injuries may result because of repetitive stress.

Some of the most critical of these injuries are burn injuries.  These occur during explosions when inflammable materials are stored or handled in hazardous conditions or in an unsafe manner.  This year’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico illustrated to the world at large how dangerous oil and gas occupations are.
