Children Are at Higher Risk of Pedestrian Accidents during Halloween

A couple of nights before Halloween is the right time to bring attention to the fact that Halloween is the deadliest time for children between the age of five and 14 in the United States.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more children of this age group are injured during Halloween than during any other night of the year.  In fact, more than 4,000 child pedestrians are injured every year during this holiday.

Motorists need to take special care on Halloween night to avoid children who are trick-or-treating.  Take extra care while you’re driving around intersections, and look out for little pedestrians at all times.  Pedestrians are always at a higher risk from motorists who are distracted while driving.  Switch off your cell phones, GPS system and turn off the music system while you’re driving.  Distractions make it easy to miss a pedestrian.  Be especially careful and look for little children who might dart out from behind cars.

If your child is going to be out trick-or-treating this Halloween, make sure that he or she is aware of all traffic rules.  Make sure the costumes are not too cumbersome.  A child could easily trip on a costume while he’s crossing the road.  Avoid masks as much as possible.  Substitute some dramatic facial makeup instead.  Keep costumes as bright and shiny as possible.  Stick some strips of reflective tape to your child’s costume as well as to the trick-or-treat bag.  Be sure that your child is accompanied by a chaperone or escort.
