CPSC Announces Ban on Drop Side Cribs

It’s official. Drop side cribs, which have been extremely popular in the US, have now officially been banned from the market place.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission last week announced a complete ban on the manufacture, distribution, sale and importation of these cribs.

As a Houston injury lawyer, I greatly welcome this ban. Drop side cribs come with one side that can be moved up and down, allowing the parent to access the child inside the crib. These cribs quickly became very popular. However, the popularity concealed a dangerous defect. The drop side was prone to dropping away from the side of the crib, creating a suffocation/entrapment/strangulation hazard.

There were dozens of reported instances of children being fatally trapped when the side detached from the crib, and created a gap. In some cases, the plastic hardware that was used to attach the drop side to the crib could fail after years of wear and tear. This could cause the drop side to detach from the crib, creating an entrapment hazard.

Drop side cribs have been one of the most pressing consumer safety issues for the CPSC for a while now. Earlier this year, the CPSC confirmed that it was proposing a complete ban on these cribs. Last week, it made the ban official.

If you are a Houston parent who still uses one of these cribs, I would strongly advise you to get rid of it immediately. No amount of convenience can compensate for the kind of inherent design dangers that these cribs come with. Besides, if you run a daycare center or any other facility that uses cribs, make sure that you don’t have any drop side cribs in your facility.
