Watch Out for Drunk Drivers This New Year’s

Over the past year, about one in every 10 drivers drove under the influence of alcohol. That is in spite of the fact that 90% of all drivers are aware of the accident hazards of drunk driving. Those scary facts come from a survey conducted by the American Automobile Association, and released just in time to coincide with the deadly New Year’s holiday.

As a Houston car accident lawyer, I fear that this New Year’s Eve holiday will see more drunk driving accidents. The holiday this year falls on a Saturday, and the last time we had a New Year’s holiday on Saturday, was back in 2005. That year, there was a spike in drunk driving accident fatalities to 98. Every year, an average of 80 people die in alcohol-fueled accidents on New Year’s. This New Year’s Eve with the holiday falling on a weekend, I dread that the numbers will be much greater.

As a Houston car accident attorney with a special focus on drunk driving accidents, I will be hoping for stronger DUI legislation in 2011. We need stronger DUI laws in Texas. Our current laws are a joke, and have not only done nothing to stem the growing number of fatalities every year in drunk driving accidents, but have also done nothing to punish DUI offenders. The DUI problem in Houston and the rest of Texas is spiraling out of control, even as the rest of the country is getting smart about using technologies and DUI laws to stamp out drunk driving. It’s time for Texas to step up and act to prevent needless fatalities every year in these accidents.
