2010 Was Deadly Year for Workplace Accidents



2010 was a terrible year for workplace safety, with close to 5,000 worker fatalities last year. The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health has released its list of the top 10 worst industrial and corporate disasters of 2010. As a Houston work injury lawyer will tell you, most of these accidents are entirely preventable.

The top 10 deadliest workplace disasters of 2010 according to COSH are:

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico which killed 11 workers. This tragedy has been covered extensively by maritime attorneys, but we are only beginning to scratch the surface of how preventable this tragedy was.

On April 5, an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia killed 29 workers. It was the worst mining disaster in the US since 1970.

On February 7, there was a massive explosion at the Kleen Energy Power Plant in Connecticut, which killed six workers and injured more than 30 others.

On April 2, another anonymous explosion at the Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company in Washington killed seven people.

On 9 December, there was another explosion at the AL Solutions plant in West Virginia, which killed two brothers working at the plant.

On March 2, four contractors who were working on top of a new storage tank at Northwest Insulation in New Mexico, suffered serious injuries, when the fire ignited. Two workers were injured, while the third suffered serious and fatal burn injuries. Another worker died a week later.

On 5 May, two workers died in a massive explosion at Amtec Corporation in Alabama, a company that manufactures rocket fuel.

On June 12, two employees died of carbon monoxide poisoning at Top-Notch Cleaners LLC in Valley, Alabama.

On July 22, two workers died in another explosion at Horseshoe Corporation in Pennsylvania.

On July 23, two workers at Northeast Energy Management Inc. in Pennsylvania suffered fatal burn injuries when the tank that they were working in exploded, throwing their bodies several feet away from the site of the explosion.
