The Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken what is a huge step for the agency in its ongoing efforts to restore its shattered credibility, and prevent defective products manufactured overseas from entering the US. The agency has opened its first overseas office in China. Considering that China manufactures a majority of the products that are consumed in the US, a single office may not seem like much, but it is a firm step.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the office will help US officials liaise with the Chinese government to enhance product safety standards. It will also help Chinese companies become more aware about product safety rules in the US, so they can conform to these.

One of the concerns I’ve had as a Houston product liability lawyer is the lack of accountability that Chinese companies have when their products injure or kill American consumers. There is no law that can force these companies to own up to their liability, and compensate their victims. This is even as hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Chinese-made products enter the US every day. Having an office in that country is definitely a firm step forward in establishing a manufacture- importation system that is designed to keep American consumers safe.

The CPSC has also been busy with other efforts to placate concerned consumers. It has announced the establishment of a new website called saferproducts.gov which will contain complaints filed by consumers. The information will be easily accessible to the public, and will help consumers make more informed decisions.

With the new website, I expect there to be a little more transparency in the manner in which the country’s premier consumer safety agency conducts its operations.
