Three workers have been confirmed injured in a construction accident that took place at Santa Fe High School in Galveston County last week. The accident involved a partial construction collapse, and one of the workers suffered life-threatening injuries.
The workers were at the site of an under construction auditorium at the high school. The accident occurred on Friday morning. The three workers suffered a 50-foot fall when the structure they were on collapsed, bringing them down with it. One worker was partially pinned under a metal beam, and suffered critical injuries. He was airlifted to the Memorial Hermann Hospital, and continues to be in a grave condition. Apparently, this worker was teetered to the structure, to prevent him from falling. Obviously, this safety procedure did not work to protect him when the structure collapsed.
The two other workers have also suffered injuries, but these are less severe ones. All three workers are employees of PC Construction Erectors in Porter. Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have reached the scene of the accident, and have initiated their probe. Police don’t have any theories about the cause of the collapse.
The construction industry continues to be one of the deadliest workplaces in the US. Approximately one in three workplace accident fatalities in the US occurs in this sector. In spite of a stronger focus on safety, the increased use of safety aids, and better training for workers, construction accident death rates in the US have not declined much. Those rates are even worse in the state of Texas, where the construction industry has struggled with substandard safety oversight.
