The Consumer Product Safety Commission has come out with a new mandated set of toddler bed safety standards. The new rules are part of the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which ordered the Consumer Product Safety Commission to set standards for cribs, beds and other children’s products.
The new toddler bed safety standards will require that the upper edge of the guardrail be at least 5 inches above the bed’s mattress, and the bed’s spindle/slat strength testing correspond with the current crib testing requirements. Besides, the new rules require that manufacturers include warning labels that describe entrapment and strangulation hazards involving toddler beds.
The announcement of the toddler bed standards comes after the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced enhanced standards for cribs, infant carriers and other children’s products. The most dramatic measure that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken toward children’s product safety in recent months was the ban on drop side cribs, which was announced last year. That ban had been in the works for several months, especially after multiple reports of injuries and strangulation/entrapment accidents involving children in the cribs. There have been at least 32 confirmed reports of infants who died from strangulation, entrapment and fall accidents involving these cribs. The Consumer Product Safety Commission last year decided to ban these cribs altogether.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been investing time in the safety of children’s sleep environments recently. As a Houston defective products lawyer, I believe that the agency should also address the growing concerns over crib bumpers. Many parents who continue to use these crib accessories are not aware of the entrapment and suffocation incidents that have been traced to their use.
