The Governors’ Highway Safety Association has troubling news for Houston motorcycle accident attorneys. According to the agency’s data, motorcycle accident fatalities across the country have dropped by 2.4% in 2010. However, the drop is too insignificant to be important, and much of the decline was recorded during a time when there were fewer motorcycles on the country’s roads.
The report concludes that unless states take immediate steps to protect motorcyclists, we could be seeing another spike in motorcycle accident fatalities over the next few years. In 2009, motorcycle accident fatalities had recorded an 11-year drop of 16% in fatalities. This year, that number has significantly decreased to 2.4%. Obviously, whatever worked for us in 2009 has failed to do so in 2010.
Besides, there is even more troubling news in the report. According to the GHSA, motorcycle helmet use is down by approximately 16% around the country.
Analyzing Texas fatalities, I found that Texas recorded a drop of 60 fatalities in the first nine months of 2010, compared to the previous year. While that is encouraging, we could be doing much more, considering that ways to prevent serious and fatal injuries in motorcycle accidents exist. For instance, this week, BMW announced that it is equipping all its motorcycles with antilock braking systems.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recommends antilock braking systems as a means to say more motorcyclist lives every year. The Insurance Institute has asked the federal administration to mandate these systems on all motorcycles, but no action has been taken. Mandating the systems will prevent the kinds of accidents that are caused when a motorcyclist brakes in an emergency. Texas also needs to revisit the issue of helmet rules.
