Worker Killed in Galveston Construction Accident

A demolition worker at the Flagship Hotel site in Galveston was killed during a massive structural collapse at the site.  The worker sustained fatal injuries when a huge concrete slab fell on him.

The accident occurred early this week, when the man, who worked for a Utah-based company, was engaged in demolishing the Flagship Hotel site, which is currently being razed to make way for a new complex, including an amusement park.  Part of the second floor under construction fell down on the worker.  The man suffered massive blunt force trauma injuries as a result of the collapse.  He was rushed to the hospital, but died the next day from his injuries.

According to reports, he was trapped underneath a concrete slab for about 20 minutes.  Hydraulic rescue crews had to be used to extricate him from the wreckage.  The demolition work at the site is currently being suspended.  Investigations into the accident are ongoing.

My thoughts and sympathies are with the family of this worker here.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is likely begin investigations into this tragedy.

In spite of all efforts, the construction industry continues to remain one of the most dangerous workplaces in the country.  One out of every three workplace fatalities in the US occurs in the construction sector.  It is a dubious distinction, and it has been a source of frustration for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Houston construction accident lawyers that in spite of our best efforts, those numbers just don’t seem to drop.  Many of these accidents are entirely preventable.
