Jason’s Law Targets Safety for Truckers

A modified version of Jason’s Law, the bill that aims to increase access to safe truck stop and parking facilities, has been reintroduced in Congress.  Its promoters hope that this time around, the bill which didn’t enjoy much success the last time it was introduced in Congress will be approved, enhancing access to safe necessities.

Across the country, states have been shutting down truck stops and parking facilities in an effort to cut costs.   This poses a huge danger to truck drivers.  When a truck driver has no access to a safe parking facility, he may be forced to pull over at abandoned areas, putting him at risk.  Jason’s Law is named after Jason Rivenburg, a truck driver who was killed during a burglary attempt on his truck which he had parked at an empty gas station in South Carolina.

When truck drivers don’t have access to safe rest areas and parking facilities, they have no place to pull over when they are tired.  Without access to safe areas and truck stops, a truck driver has no choice but to keep driving in a state of fatigue until he reaches the next truck stop, increasing his risks of an accident.

As a Houston truck accident attorney, I have supported Jason’s Law, because it will target a much neglected factor in trucking safety.  Jason’s Law had been introduced in Congress earlier, but did not make much progress.  This time round, its promoters will be hoping that lawmakers recognize the need to improve truck driver access to safe truck areas and commercial motor vehicle parking facilities.
