A forum that is set to meet this week in Boston aims to boost research and treatment for traumatic brain injury. The One Mind for Research Scientific Forum is being launched by former US representative Patrick Kennedy. The launch of the forum coincides with the anniversary of Pres. John F. Kennedy’s challenge to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade.
According to Kennedy, the world now needs an inspiring new initiative that will challenge researchers, scientists and the larger community to develop treatments and cures for brain injury and disease.
At the forum, scientists will present a plan for a 10-year initiative that aims to dramatically enhance our understanding about the treatment of brain injuries and diseases. There are certain topics that will be prominent at the forum. These include the incidences of traumatic brain injury among vets returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. The military has been deeply concerned about the shattered lives of vets returning home from combat with severe traumatic brain injuries that leave them physically, emotionally and mentally disabled. These vets often suffer post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and a host of other challenges that they must conquer before they can dream of returning to life as it was before the injury.
Unfortunately, research into traumatic brain injury has stalled in recent years, and little progress is being made. What also concerns me as a Houston brain injury attorney is the drying up of sources of funding for such research. Hopefully, the forum will take up these issues and reenergize research into brain injury
