This is the sort of news that I hate to share, but as a Houston motorcycle accident lawyer, it is important for me to bring attention to the increase in motorcycle accident deaths in Texas. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of the total number of traffic deaths in Texas in 2009.
Overall, in 2009, there were 434 motorcycle accident fatalities. More than 5,800 motorcyclists were injured in accidents that year. The final statistics of 2010 are not yet in.
Most motorcycle accidents occur at intersections, or when a motorcycle is changing lanes. It’s important that drivers look out for motorcyclists when they’re near intersections. However, that often doesn’t happen with devastating consequences for the motorcyclist.
The Department of Transportation also says that there has been an increase in the number of motorcycles on Texas roads. The number of motorcycles in Texas has increased to more than 422,800 over the last decade. The recent increase in gas prices has also meant more numbers of motorcyclists taking to the road on motorcycles. In April, the Texas Department of Transportation kicked off a motorcycle safety initiative called Share the Road. It is meant to highlight the growing risks to motorcyclists.
The worst is yet to come. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, if we don’t get serious about motorcycle safety, the number of fatalities in these accidents could increase by 100% over the next four years.
