The increase in safety technologies in automobiles is one of the reasons why there has been a continuing drop in auto accident fatalities in the United States. Unfortunately, Houston motorcycle accident attorneys cannot say the same thing about motorcycles. Motorcycles today are faster, sleeker and more powerful than in the past, but not necessarily safer. The motorcycle industry has failed to add powerful safety technologies that would reduce the number of motorcycle accidents and save lives every year.
This is part of the reason why motorcycle accident fatalities have remained high over the past few decades. There hasn’t been that much progress in reducing the numbers of people who are killed in motorcycle accidents. This is in spite of the fact that motorcyclists have a higher risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident than occupants of an automobile.
As a Houston motorcycle accident lawyer, I would like to see more motorcycles equipped with antilock braking technologies. According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, these technologies can help lower the risks of suffering a serious motorcycle accident. The Insurance Industry for Highway Safety in fact has recommended that these technologies be mandated on all motorcycles in order to save more lives in motorcycle accidents every year.
However, the motorcycle industry doesn’t seem to be listening. Earlier this year, BMW took a strong first step by announcing that it would make antilock brakes mandatory on motorcycles from the 2012 model year onwards. Other motorcycle manufacturers need to follow suit.
