There has been yet another serious bus accident in Texas, this one involving a charter bus that overturned near San Marcos.
The accident occurred last Friday. There were 21 passengers on the bus. All of them were injured and had to be taken to the hospital. At least two people in the bus suffered head injuries.
The charter operated by Mares Bus Lines was on its way from the Laredo to Dallas. On Interstate 35, the bus suddenly overcorrected and flipped over. According to news reports, the driver fell asleep while driving, and it was then that the vehicle struck a highway sign, and overturned. Initial investigations have concluded that driver fatigue was indeed the main contributing factor in this crash. So far no charges have been filed. Investigations are continuing.
This seems to be becoming an increasingly familiar news story in Texas. Over the past few years, there have been several serious bus accidents in Texas, many of them ending with serious injuries and fatalities. This recent accident coincides with a report in USA Today that alleges that the federal administration’s data on bus accidents is flawed. The investigation found that the data included in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s system omits several bus accidents and fatalities between 1995 and 2009.
These allegations come at a time when Houston bus accident lawyers are concerned about bus safety around the country. Already, 2011 has seen several high-impact fatal accidents. The total fatality toll from bus accidents in 2011 has already touched 25 and we’ve barely crossed the six-month mark.
