Lawmakers Try to Eliminate Funding for Consumer Product Safety Website

Just a few months after the launch of Saferproducts.gov, the consumer product safety website that has been widely supported by Houston product liability attorneys, lawmakers are already trying to derail the project.  A new spending bill will substantially reduce funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  The bill contains a clause that would completely cut funding for the database.

The database allows consumers to post complaints about products that they have purchased.  Manufacturers are allowed to read these complaints, and respond.  The website allows American consumers greater access to safety information of the kind they need to make safe buying decisions.

Even before the launch of the database, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association and the National Association of Manufacturers found problems with the website.  According to them, the information on the website could be used by product liability attorneys in lawsuits against companies.  Now, lawmakers want to ensure that none of the funds that are provided to the Consumer Product Safety Commission are used to maintain the database.

The mandate for the database is included in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which was signed by President Bush in 2008.  Barely 3 years later, we have a database, but it looks like we won’t have one for very long.  If lawmakers have their way, funding for the database will end, and so will this essential experiment in product safety.
