A new analysis of brain injuries in veterans has found that a traumatic brain injury can increase the risk of developing dementia in the future. The study raises concerns about the increased mental health issues facing people who have suffered a brain injury.
According to the study, veterans who suffer even a mild brain injury, like a concussion had an increased risk of developing dementia. The researchers found that about 15% of people, who had suffered a brain injury, had an increased risk of developing dementia. In comparison, only 7% of people with TBI had the risk of dementia.
There have been other studies into the increased risk of dementia among brain injury patients, but these have mainly focused on the link between moderate/severe brain injury and dementia. The study, which was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association’s National Conference in France, however shows that even mild brain injury can increase a person’s dementia risk.
The existing body of research into the association between TBI and dementia has yielded confusing results. Some studies indicate a strong association, and others find no strong link between dementia and a traumatic brain injury. As a Houston brain injury lawyer, I strongly believe that we need more extensive research into the link between TBI and early symptoms of dementia. We also need research that can investigate whether beginning the process of rehabilitation early after a brain injury can help delay symptoms of dementia, or prevent it altogether.
