Worker Killed in San Marcos Construction Accident

A thirty-two-year-old construction worker has been confirmed dead in an accident on a site in San Marcos, Texas.

The accident occurred last Wednesday, at the site of a plant that manufactures refinery equipment.  A metal building frame collapsed, and the victim sustained fatal injuries.  One of his colleagues also suffered serious injuries in the accident, and was taken to the University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has already begun an investigation into the accident.  Both the victim as well as the man who was injured in the accident work for a subcontractor at the site.

One out of every three workplace accident deaths every year occurs in the construction industry.  That is a dismal safety record, and even more so in Texas.  The situation has been improving somewhat, however. According to the Workers Defense Project, there has been a slight decline in construction-related fatalities in the state between 2009 and 2010.  However, the drop is just a minor difference of four fatalities , not nearly enough to encourage Houston construction accident attorneys.

As a Houston construction accident lawyer, I have also noticed some changes in the attitude of employers towards worker safety.  However, a change in attitude is not enough.  These attitudes need to trickle down in the form of stronger safety measures for workers on the ground.  There must enhanced training for workers, availability of protective gear, better use of protective devices, and established systems and procedures in place to prevent accidents and injuries.
