OSHA Cites Midland-based Company in Worker’s Electrocution death

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited a Midland-based company for several safety violations in connection with the death of a worker from electrocution.  Trinidad Drilling LLP as has been cited for several serious and repeat violations.  The worker had been electrocuted while he pumped water below an oil rig’s substructure.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration began its inspection of the facility in February.  According to the agency, this is not the first time that Trinidad Drilling has been found to have exposed employees to several workplace dangers.  In fact according to the agency, if Trinidad Drilling had followed all workplace safety procedures, then this electrocution accident could likely have been avoided.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has found Trinidad Drilling in violation of several safety procedures, including failure to ensure that labeled equipment was used according to manufacturer’s specifications, and failure to ensure proper grounding.  The company was also cited for several repeat violations, including failure to inspect the electrical equipment, and failure to see that flexible electrical cords were spliced properly.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed $91,000 in proposed penalties against Trinidad Drilling.

Electrocution and electric shock hazards can exist in just about any workplace.  Most of these accidents can be prevented if workers are trained properly to handle electrical equipment safely.  Employers also have a duty to provide safe electrical equipment and tools to work with.
