A man from College Station was killed in an accident on an oil-rig last week. The man had apparently been dismantling the rig, when he was suddenly struck by heavy equipment.
According to news reports, the victim had been standing next to a forklift that was hauling a load of pipe. Suddenly, the pipe shifted, and fell on the victim. The victim was airlifted to the USA Texas Medical Branch, but was declared dead.
Workplace accidents involving pedestrian workers occur frequently in any kind of setting. There are several risks to pedestrian workers when equipment like forklifts and trucks are operating nearby. Pedestrian workers may be struck by forklifts and trucks, and seriously injured. These vehicles may even back over pedestrian workers, resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Workers may also be hit by loads that fall off a forklift or crane.
These injuries can be prevented if employers set down proper rules in place for the safety of pedestrian workers. If possible, potential workers must not be allowed in the vicinity of trucks and forklifts in operation. Workers must be trained to communicate with each other and warn each other about any possible accident risks. Workers must also be trained to coordinate activities, in order to avoid accidents like this.
