San Antonio Company Cited for Construction Safety Hazards

As part of its continued efforts to prevent workplace injuries and fatalities in Texas, the Occupational Safety and Administration has conducted inspections of a company in San Antonio, and has issued several citations.

The citations came after an inspection of a Roma Construction worksite in Wild Basin, San Antonio.   Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors found several workplace hazards.  For instance, they found that workers had been exposed to serious scaffolding dangers.  Under Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines, workers who are involved in erecting, dismantling, or moving of scaffolding are required to do so only after being trained by a competent person. Roma Construction was cited for a serious violation for failing to do so.

The company was also cited for five repeat violations, including failing to ensure that the scaffolding was probably planned, failing to ensure inspection of scaffolding for defects, and failure to protect employees from fall accidents.

The company was also cited with repeat violations.  A company may be cited for repeat violations when it has previously been cited for the same or similar violations.  In this case, Roma Construction had been cited for similar violations in 2009.

Workers engaged in scaffolding activities must be protected by guardrails and safety nets.  Further, these workers must be given fall protection gear and personal fall arrest systems to protect them from fall accidents.  These safety aids are imperative when a worker is engaged in construction work that is at least 6 feet above ground level.
