MSF Kicks off Motorcycle Crash Causation Study

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has begun its naturalistic study of motorcycle accident causes, by announcing that the first motorcyclist with recording equipment installed in the motorcycle is already off on a year-long trial.

The study will involve 100 motorcycle riders, who will have a number of recording gadgets installed in their motorcycles.  The point is to record the motorcyclist’s riding behavior as he rides everyday in normal conditions.  The cameras will also track what happens during and just before an accident.  Footage from the seconds before an accident are extremely important, because these can provide vital clues about how the motorcyclist could have prevented the accident, and why he was unable to do so. This naturalistic study is a far cry from typical motorcycle crash research that involves investigations of accident scenes.  In the study, researchers will have access to the accurate, natural, real-time data that is necessary to develop new insights into motorcycle crash causes.

There is no doubt that there is a strong need for a study like this.  Motorcycle crash fatalities have been increasing steadily over the past few years.  Last year, there was a slight decline in accident fatalities, but that likely had to do with the recession, and the fact that fewer people were buying motorcycles and riding on a recreational basis.

Understanding the kind of environment that a motorcyclist is riding in, and the events just before a crash, can help researchers understand more about the causes of motorcycle accidents and why these are so fatal to motorcyclists.  Transportation safety agencies can then make use of these studies to design and develop motorcycle safety programs.
