The National Transportation Safety Board is using the deaths of 11 people in a distracted driving-related truck accident in Kentucky, to recommend a ban on cell phone use while driving for commercial truck and bus drivers. The kind of ban that the Board is recommending would include both hand-held cell phones as well as hands-free sets.
In December, the Department of Transportation banned texting while driving for commercial truck and bus riders. That ban was recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board, which has since also recommended a ban on cell phone use while driving for boat operators.
The ban on cell phone use while driving in the maritime industry came after a deadly accident on the Delaware River that involved an amphibious tourist boat and a tugboat. Two people were killed when the tugboat-barge formation crashed into the tourist boat. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board later found that a mate on the tugboat had made and received several phone calls in the minutes leading up to the crash.
Some trucking companies already have a policy in place banning texting while driving and cell phone use while driving. Industry groups have already expressed their support for any ban on cell phone use while driving for commercial truck and bus drivers. The Department of Transportation is now likely to pursue a complete ban on cell phone use while driving, except in emergency situations, for commercial truck and bus drivers.
