Experiments with Blood Test Diagnosis Offer New Hope for Brain Injury Treatment

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic are working on developing a test to diagnose brain injury.  The test will be able to detect specific amounts of a protein which is leaked after an injury.  This would make detecting a brain injury much quicker, more convenient, and less expensive.

Typically, a person with a brain injury needs to undergo a computed tomography, or CT scan to diagnose the injury.  These scans are not only expensive, but may also miss many of the minor signs of an injury.  For instance, bleeding in the brain after an injury may not appear on a CT scan.  A blood test, on the other hand, would be able to determine protein levels in the blood, thereby confirming the injury.

What makes Traumatic Brain Injury so devastating is that there is no complete cure for these injuries.  All that doctors can do is limit the severity and extent of the injury, by beginning treatment as quickly as possible.  For that, it’s important that diagnosis be done immediately.  Delayed treatment could leave a person with limited cognitive and mental abilities, severely impacting his quality of life.  A person may require extensive rehabilitation to regain his abilities to perform routine tasks, including feeding and dressing himself.

The US military is also currently developing tests that will look for brain injury biomarkers to confirm an injury.  The Department of Defense is in the forefront of cutting-edge research into brain injury treatment, because of the heavy toll that these injuries have taken on veterans.
