While car seat usage rates across the country have increased, and more numbers of parents are restraining their children in these seats, many parents are also making errors in the way they use these seats. These errors are serious enough to cause injuries to a child in the event of an accident.
According to a survey, more than 70% of respondents in the survey admitted to shifting their child from a rear-facing car seat to a front-facing car seat soon after the child’s first birthday. Toddlers are much safer in a rear-facing car seat, because being seated in this manner protects them from impact during a head-on collision. However, the survey shows that many parents are moving their children to the front-facing car seat far too early.
Additionally, many parents seem to be following the car seat maker’s instructions to decide that the child should be in the front-facing car seat. According to many car seat instructions, the seat should not be used in a front facing position until the child weighs at least 20 pounds. However, many children may reach that weight limit even before their first birthday, but that does not mean that the child is now ready to be placed in a front-facing car seat. In such cases, parents can get larger seats that can be faced both ways.
