Drunk driving has claimed two more victims in Houston. This week, two pedestrians were killed in a drunk driving accident involving a hit-and-run driver in southwest Houston. According to the police, an intoxicated motorist was driving a Toyota Corolla, when she ran a red light and hit a young man and woman walking on the street.
The female pedestrian was dragged for about 50 yards. The motorist would have continued driving on, if witnesses at the scene had not been alert enough to stop her. They detained her until police arrived. Both pedestrians have been confirmed dead in the accident. The driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
In the year 2009, there were a total of 3,071 traffic accident deaths in the state of Texas. Out of these, 1437 fatalities involved drunk driving accidents. About 47% of accident fatalities in 2009 were caused by drivers driving under the influence of alcohol. Out of these drivers, 1,235 drivers were driving with a blood-alcohol level of, or above .08%.
Those statistics only confirm what every Houston car accident lawyer knows-Texas has a major problem with drunk driving, and it doesn’t seem like lawmakers will be taking the problem seriously anytime soon. Lawmakers have continued to dither on possibly life-saving sobriety checkpoint initiatives that can keep intoxicated motorists off the street. More lives could be saved if we had laws requiring the installation of ignition interlock devices on the vehicles of all DUI offenders.
