Feds Launch Surprise Bus Safety Inspections

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is coming down hard on bus companies that violate safety regulations, exposing passengers to the risk of injuries and accidents.  The agency has launched a massive inspection effort that will involve thousands of inspections right through October 7, 2011.

All kinds of buses, including tour buses, and school buses will be included in the initiative.  The inspections are part of the agency’s Nationwide Passenger Carrier Strike Force.  It is also meant to go coincide with the National Motor Coach Safety Summit in Washington which is being sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.  The summit is expected to look at ways to raise the safety bar for the industry, and comes during a year when Houston bus accident lawyers have been horrified at a high number of fatal bus accidents.  This increase in bus accidents has come after several years of a declining bus accident rate.

Much of the problem with bus safety has been the lack of oversight over errant bus companies, and the ease with which bus companies with safety violations can simply reemerge under new names and identities.  Many bus accidents have been traced to companies like these.

The agency has proposed several new rules that should take care of these problems.  The agency has also announced that it will launch a Smartphone application that will allow passengers to check a bus carrier’s safety record before a trip.
