A pickup truck driver was killed in an accident involving an 18- wheeler on Loop 1604 in Texas last week.  The  cattle truck was carrying about 180 cows.  According to authorities, the two vehicles were traveling in the same direction, when the truck seems to have rolled over on the pickup truck.  The driver was killed instantly. Authorities are trying to determine the cause of the rollover.

Rollover accidents are some of the most devastating accidents involving tractor-trailers and 18- wheelers.  Unfortunately, these accidents are far too frequent, and often involve certain types of trucks, like tank trucks.  One of the biggest reasons for truck rollovers is a shift in the cargo, causing a redistribution of weight, and a loss of balance.  Whatever the cause of the rollover, any rollover accident involving a tractor-trailer can have serious consequences, not just for the driver of the 18- wheeler, but also motorists nearby.

As a Houston truck accident attorney, what I find really appalling is that the technology to prevent rollover accidents involving tractor-trailers exists, but its use has not been encouraged.  Stability control mechanisms of the sort that exist in many automobiles are available for trucks too.  These systems can help a driver maintain control of his truck even at high speeds.  These stability control systems have helped dramatically reduce the number of rollover accidents involving automobiles.  They could do the same for commercial trucks too, if these were mandated by the federal administration.

Unfortunately, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration does not mandate stability control on all trucks, in spite of recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board.  However, several trucking companies have chosen to install these devices on their fleet with successful results.
