Survey Indicates Heavy Motorist Cell Phone Use

According to a survey by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety, lack of awareness about the dangers of texting and the use of cell phones while driving is definitely not a factor in distracted driving accidents.  More than 90% of the persons in the survey said that they knew of the risks of texting while driving, and more than 88% of drivers believed that cell phone use increased their risks of being involved in an accident.  However the knowledge of those risks did not limit these practices at all.

According to the survey, 35% of drivers admitted that they had texted while driving over the past month.  These drivers had either received or sent a text message while driving in the past 30 days.  (Contrary to popular belief, reading a text message is just as distracting as composing one is).  Additionally, 67% of drivers had had a conversation on the cell phone while driving in the past month.  Even worse, more than one third of the drivers admitted that they talk on the cell phone regularly while driving.

This survey coincides with another study that I blogged about last week, which found that the risks from texting while driving are much greater than believed.

It’s hard to imagine that any text message or cell phone conversation, except one for emergency services, is worth dying for.  That’s the message that needs to be targeted at Texas drivers.  Please switch off your phones while driving – the risk simply isn’t worth it.
