Increased Enforcement in Texas during School Bus Safety Week

This week, states across the country are marking National School Bus Safety Week.  In Texas, officers of the Department of Public Safety are making additional rounds, looking out for violators who drive past a stopped bus that is dropping or picking up kids.

According to the Texas Highway Patrol, troopers will be carrying out additional enforcement activities in order to prevent accidents involving schoolchildren alighting or getting onto school buses.  Violators, who are caught driving illegally passing a stopped school bus, will be fined up to $1,000.

Many accidents occur when children are alighting or getting onto a bus, and are hit by a car that has not bothered to stop.  Anytime a school bus light is flashing, motorists should know that children could be crossing in front of the bus, or could be behind the bus.  Drivers need to stop, but very often, they don’t do so.

According to the Texas Highway Patrol, officers conduct this kind of enforcement throughout the year, but this week, enforcement will be stepped up.  In 2010, there were 752 school bus accidents, and these led to one death.  89 people were injured in these accidents.

This year, school bus safety efforts by the Texas Department of Public Safety are likely to specifically focus on rural areas.  In these rural towns, the numbers of accidents involving motorists racing past a stopped school bus are much higher than in urban areas.
