Auto Makers Need to Minimize Distractions in Cars

When it comes to distracted driving, many automakers talk the talk, but the commitment ends there.  Automakers including Ford and General Motors have all kinds of anti-distracted driving campaigns underway, but these companies continue to introduce more and more distracting gadgets in their automobiles to attract consumers.

For instance, Ford’s Sync voice-activated system allows a driver to read text messages and dial phone numbers without taking his hands off the steering feel.  Unfortunately, the distraction exists even when a motorist has his hands on the wheel at all times.  At the same time, Ford conducts anti-distracted driving clinics for high school students, to educate them about the dangers of using cell phones while driving.

An advertisement for General Motors Chevy Cruze shows a young man having his Facebook status updates read back to him by his voice-activated system while he is driving back home after a date.  The ad is designed to appeal to younger drivers, who are already at a much higher risk of distracted driving.

Auto makers need to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to preventing distracted driving.  Adding even more distracting gadgets to automobiles does not help eliminate distracted driving, and does not reduce the accident risk to drivers on the road.
