Although 9 out of 10 parents say that their children go trick-or-treating on Halloween, one in ten does not bother to discuss Halloween safety tips with their children. A new study by Safe Kids USA also finds that many parents make critical Halloween safety mistakes, including making their children wear cumbersome costumes with masks, and allowing children to go out trick-or-treating unsupervised.
A new study by Safe Kids USA titled Halloween Safety: A National Survey of Parents Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors finds that while Halloween is one of the most eagerly-awaited holidays in the country, there are still far too many parents who may be placing their children at risk of injuries and accidents. More pedestrian accidents involving children occur on this holiday, than any other day of the year.
Children below the age of 12 must never be allowed to go trick-or-treating without adult supervision. Don’t depend on older siblings to look out for younger children, because older children are just as likely to be distracted by the excitement of the holiday. Children must know the rules of pedestrian safety, including looking to the left, right and then left, before crossing a street, and only crossing on marked or designated crosswalks. Stick reflective tape on a children’s clothing to make it visible.
Drivers also need to look out for pedestrians on Halloween, and slow down especially at intersections and crosswalks. Look for young pedestrians who may be darting out from behind parked cars.
