Little Tikes and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced a recall of toolsets due to choking risks. The choking risks are related to oversized plastic nails that come with the Little Tikes toolsets.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of at least two incidents in which children choked on the plastic nails. In both cases however, caregivers were able to get to the children in time to prevent a tragedy. The children were treated for their injuries, and have recovered completely.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is asking parents to remove the plastic nails in these toolkits. Parents are also advised to contact Little Tikes for a replacement of the nails. These plastic nails had been involved in an earlier recall in 2009. In that recall, the company had recalled about 1.6 million workshops and trucks because of the same choking hazard. The plastic nails are about 3.25 inches long and 1.25 inches in diameter.
Choking remains one of the leading causes of death in children below the age of five. Children can choke not only on small detachable parts of toys, but also small balls, magnets, marbles and balloons.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken measures to prevent choking hazards in toys and children’s products. The agency requires that toys that are intended for children between ages three and six do not come with small and detachable parts. Toys with detachable parts must come with a choking hazard warning.
