Every year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration releases its top ten citations for workplace safety, and every year, there’s nothing on the list that really surprises Houston workplace accident lawyers. Most of the spots on the list are occupied by the same violations year after year, although there are slight changes in the way these rank on the list.
This year is no different. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has partnered with the National Safety Council to release the top ten most frequently cited safety violations of 2011. This year, the top spots on the list have been captured by:
- Fall protection – These violations accounted for 7,139 violations in 2011. Not surprisingly, many of these fatalities occurred in the construction sector.
- Scaffolding violations – Last year, these accounted for about 7,069 violations.
- Hazard communications – These accounted for 6,538 violations.
- Respiratory protection – These accounted for 3,944 violations.
- Lockout/tag out – These accounted for 3,639 violations.
- Electrical-wiring methods violations – These accounted for 3,584 violations
- Ladders – These accounted for 3,244 violations
- Electrical-General requirements – These accounted for 2,863 violations. According to the Bureau of Labor Services, in the year 2009, there were 1,600 serious injuries caused by electrical shocks in the workplace.
- Machine guarding – In 2010, ninety workers were killed in machinery – related accidents. The previous year, there were 5,930 amputations caused by machinery-related accidents.
A look at the list over the past few years indicates that fall protection has featured at the top for a while now. In spite of the fact that fall accidents are easily preventable through the use of personal fall restraint systems, stable ladders, guardrails, and slip-proof flooring, thousands of workers are seriously injured or killed in these accidents annually.
